This month, we caught up with certified Kinesiologist, GYROTONIC® practitioner and brand strategist Lia Wong to uncover her journey into the light.

 

When did you begin your journey in to wellness and healing?

 

I used to be a professional ballroom dancer and sustained quite a few injuries. Towards the end of my dance career, I started seeking alternative therapies to help alleviate pain. I really submersed myself into wellness and healing around three years ago when I moved from New York City to Hong Kong. I was still suffering from chronic pain even though I had stopped dancing, I also suffered from a weak immune system and my relationship fell apart. I found myself feeling unfulfilled in my career, so I decided to put my health and well-being first and foremost. I wanted to give myself a makeover of sorts…to make healing my body, mind and heart a priority.

 

How important do think it is for people to “live their wild” and what does that mean to you?

 

Living your wild means being able to create a life that you deeply desire, and to me, it’s very important. I believe that at our core, humans seek connection and fulfilment and that sense of contentment comes from living our purpose.

However, many of us have been conditioned to believe that we can’t make our dreams into a reality, whether it’s negative subconscious belief holding us back or past experiences and adversity. Life is entirely what you make of it. Just imagine what we could achieve if we believed anything were possible, and just how much happier and healthier the world would be if every single individual out there was feeling fulfilled, happy and healthy. What a difference that would make in the world!

 

How did you first discover kinesiology?

I first experienced kinesiology during a detox retreat at Absolute Sanctuary in Koh Samui. I was fascinated by the muscle testing and being able to witness the body’s innate wisdom. As soon as I returned to Hong Kong, I looked up kinesiology and found Kinesiology Asia, which is located in Central. I happened to catch the beginning of a kinesiology certification course. It felt so right to me that I signed up on the spot.

 

For those who haven’t tried kinesiology, why would you recommend it to them?

It’s a gentle holistic healing system that’s useful for a number of different things from physical ailments such as chronic pain and muscle tension, to allergies and digestive issues. I find it particularly useful for overcoming negative subconscious beliefs. In kinesiology, we test different muscles in the body to see  where there’s stress and help bring the muscles back into optimal function. Because we are dealing with muscles and it’s a nervous system response, we are working largely through the subconscious. Essentially, our subconscious mind is a computer programs that runs in the background which is largely shaped by our upbringing and from past experiences. So say if I’m a runner and I believe that I can run 8km, my chances of making that a reality are very possible. However, if “I can run 8km easily” is stressful to my system or subconscious mind, it is more likely to create stress and cause imbalances in my muscles, making achieving that goal a bit more challenging.

I would strongly recommend it for stress management and to give you the additional support you need on goal setting, whether it’s in your career, relationship, or finances.

 

What is the GYROTONIC® method?

The GYROTONIC® Method is an original and unique movement method that addresses the entire person, opening energy pathways, stimulating the nervous system, increasing range of motion, improving strength, and efficiency of movement.The movement is flowing with a fluidity similar to tai chi or swimming. We use gentle resistance in the form of pulleys and weights.

 

How did GYROTONIC® help you on your journey to wellness?

GYROTONIC® helped me regain mobility and flexibility. Most importantly, it gave me a better understanding of the body.

 

In addition to kinesology and the GYROTONIC® method, how do you find the time to also run your creative consultancy?

For me the key has been setting firm boundaries, so that there are set times where I’m available for each activity. I’ve recently decided to focus mainly on my consultancy projects and kinesiology. I enjoy doing many different things but in this case was feeling that focus was required for me to become a more effective practitioner and to focus on previously committed projects.

 

What’s your go-to method to help you relax in a busy city like Hong Kong?

Spending plenty of time in nature! This includes plenty of hikes and lots of time out on the water. I enjoy windsurfing and am often out on the water.

 

What are your favourite spas to go to in Hong Kong?

My favourite (splurge) spa to treat myself is The Four Seasons. I love that you can spend the day there enjoying the luxurious facilities (I love the amethyst crystal steam room and relaxation lounge) before and after your massage. (Also, the marshmallows outside the treatment rooms are made in-house, and are absolutely divine!)
