Picking out the right colour nail polish can feel like you’re deciding the fate of the world. There are hundreds of colours, sometimes on a large display wheel and sometimes just in a book. When you find yourself trying to decide between a deep rouge and a slightly orange rouge, you can help the process along by using our handy guide to discover which shades are perfect for you. Be it the twilight blue in a matte finish, or the Wan Chai red in a gloss finish, there’s always a colour that will make you proud of your digits.
Paler skin tones are considered a cool skin type. It can feel like a little bit of a challenge trying to find the perfect shade. Some shades will wash your complexion out rather than complimenting it and leave you feeling like a ghost with great nail beds. When choosing a shade to compliment your soft complexion, try to choose blue-based colours or soft pastels. Unfortunately, heavy blacks and blues can make you look a little gothic and will wash you out completely-unless you’re going for that look in which case, eat your heart out!
A great go-to colour is a soft peach tone, which has the added benefit of making your hand look slimmer and more delicate. Peach also suits nails of any length, so feel free to get your talons peachy keen for summer.
Yes to Paler or pastel pinks, pale peach, beige, soft blue-reds
No to Dark polishes like dark blue or black, yellow, green, gold, and orange.
Slightly different to a pale complexion, light complexions are sometimes referred to as fair skin tones. This colour skin has the best of both worlds as it tends to suit both cooler or warmer colours. The cool tones of your skin will pop with blue-based nail colours (think Louboutin red or Ultramarine), but the warmer undertones in your skin will also pop with a polish that has yellow/orange undertones. The salon is your oyster!
Yes: Beige, whites, and silvers. Light and medium toned purples (like lavenders), soft oranges, darker pinks, reds and berry shades. You’ll also look rocking in a French manicure.
No: Very dark blues, blacks, greens, dark orange, or golds.
That sun-kissed complexion that many of us are envious of is best suited to warmer colours (like the beach or a coconut cocktail). Try to find blue and yellow based shades like warm pale shades of brown, blues, pinks, and purples. These warmer tones will help to accentuate your skin colour. Just avoid golds as they blend into your skin and make you look like you left your nails at home.
Yes: Light blues, pinks, and purples, tangerine, light brown, copper browns, and chocolate (yum).
Olive or mediterranean complexions suit a range of colours, and just like tanned complexions, they suit yellow or blue based shades. You can wear dark burgundies and wines, bright and vibrant colours like fuchsia, and even metallics like gold and silver. If your skin complexion is darker, you can also wear black, navy, and dark pinks and reds.
Olive complexions also tend to rock earthy tones, and should avoid colours that are blue-based or orangey-reds (they make you look a little off-colour). Also pastel pinks can make your skin look a little yellow, and no one wants to be constantly reassuring concerned citizens that they don’t have jaundice.
Yes: orange, pink and blue, light blue, lilac, silver, metallics, and glittery polishes.
No: Dark purple or red (if they’re blue-based). Also avoid paler shades like pastel pink etc.
Dark complexions can wear rich, deep shades that will flatter the skin and makes your manicure look super groovy. Try to aim for burgundies, vibrant purples, and plums. Bright oranges and pinks have the potential to suit, but there is a fine line where they can make your nails look dated.
Yes: Dark purples, yellow-based reds, dark greens and blues, black, chocolate-brown, and gold.
No: Orange, yellow, neon colours, pastels, white, and silver.
When it comes to choosing a colour or a shade and you are really not sure if it will work, ask your nail technician to paint a small patch on your nail and then take a photo of it in the light. Your camera will pick up tones that you may not be able to see under the salon lights (plus you can send the photo to all your friends and get a group decision).
