We’ve all been there. After work, casual, quiet, and supposedly “one or two and then go home” drinks can leave us waking up the next morning feeling like there’s a marching band in our skull. Rolling over makes us feel nauseated, loud noises feel like daggers, and functioning beyond ordering delivery from McDonalds seems an impossible task.
If lying in bed all day regretting those Lan Kwai cocktails is out of the question then you need to start tackling your hangover the right way.
Why do I have a hangover?
Probably because tequila shots were a good idea at 3am.
In all seriousness though, it’s difficult to pinpoint exactly where your hangover came from. One big problem we have in Hong Kong is drinking alcohol in the heat, which leads to dehydration as we sleep it off (to combat this, try to stick to this rule of drinking: one drink should always be followed with a glass of water).
Outside of dehydration it could be any number of things: too much sugar, artificial ingredients in the drink, loud music, and generally just too much of a good thing.
Whatever the cause, hangovers suck. The good news is that you’ll live, the bad news is that the hangover will be there for the next few hours or days.
Psst: if you’re planning on having a big night, save yourself some major future skin issues and keep a bottle of Micellar water next to your bed. Thank us later.
Let’s fight the good fight against the hangover!
Hydrate, hydrate, and when you’re done hydrating then hydrate some more.
After drinking enough alcohol to sink a ship, the body becomes deprived of potassium which can leave you feeling extra nasty. Luckily, we have our old friend Mr. Banana which is jam packed with potassium goodness that will boost your levels in no time.
We love keeping a few spare bananas in the BloomMe office fridge because they’re a healthy, slow-release energy snack that can be eaten discreetly when the hangover headache is too much. Plus, bananas go perfectly with peanut butter (yum).
A big serving of fresh juice can be just what you need to finally kick this hangover in the butt. After drinking, your body’s blood sugar levels can be a little all over the shop, and a way to replenish these essential vitamins and minerals is to indulge in a big glass of juice. Orange, grapefruit, best of all fresh coconut water, are all good options for when you need to help your energy levels perk up again.
As tempting as it is, try to avoid going overboard on the coffee and tea. Coffee and tea are both diuretics and can leave you even more dehydrated than before. If you absolutely need to have a few cups of tea or coffee, remember to drink water along with it.
Grabbing a spoonful of honey on a piece of toast can be a simple lifesaver the morning after. Potassium rich, antioxidant rich, and a natural-sugar super hero, honey has long been our go-to fix up snack. If you had a night of sugary drinks and you’re craving heavy carbs, have a few pieces of honey toast and feel better.
Thick, juicy, hearty soup will send your heart a flutter with relief when you’re stuck in bed. Again, filled with nutrients and vitamins that your body is craving, a nice chicken or minestrone soup with a side of bread is an easy=to=digest pick me up that can help to alleviate the pain of a hangover.
Hair of the dog
An old fashioned but tried and true way of curing a hangover is to keep on with what you were doing: having another drink. With this method, rather than going on another bender try having a small glass of alcohol the morning. It is a cheap way of softening the blows from the hangover. As to why it works, some argue that a hangover is your body suffering from alcohol withdrawal and the only cure is to ween yourself off it. Others say that it’s methanol metabolism and through the power of science the pain of the night is put on hiatus. All we know is that it’s a good idea to have that champagne at brunch the morning after.
