It’s November! And apart from bringing us closer to Christmas, this month holds a special place in many hearts for one reason: Movember. It’s time to start raising awareness for men’s health and to start growing out those ‘staches long and proud.
Where did it all begin?
Movember, a combination of the words moustache and November, found it’s humble beginnings in 1999 in a small pub in Adelaide, where a group of friends decided to grow out their moustaches to raise awareness of men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men’s suicide. They also partnered with the RSPCA selling t-shirts with the slogans “Whiskers for Whiskers”. The movement became a nation-wide phenomenon and soon moustaches of all sizes and shapes became the norm for the month of November.
In 2004, an unrelated group in Melbourne organised for 30 men to grow moustaches for 30 days in order to raise funds for research for men’s prostate cancer and depression. This group later on became the Movember Foundation Charity. Over 10 years later, Movember has become a global movement with over $6HKD billion raised worldwide. Funds raised in Hong Kong go to Hong Kong charities and research funds.
Growing a moustache for the first time can feel scary, and at times very itchy, but the most important part of Movember is taking care of your hair. Here are some steps to ensure that your moustache stays glorious.
Shampoo regularly – moustaches catch all kinds of things (not just loving looks from passerbys). Crumbs, coffee, dust, glitter, it all gets caught. Make sure to give your mo a good shampooing in the shower.
Conditioning – facial hair is coarse by nature and it will really benefit from a good conditioning. Let a glob sit in your stache for a few minutes before rinsing.
Hot towels – steam your skin with a hot towel whenever you can to help keep your skin fresh.
Get a facial – a good moisturising facial will do wonders for your skin and can help stimulate hair growth. For a list of facials, check out our list here.
Styling your Mo
With great beards come great responsibilities. Whether you are growing a trucker stache or aiming for a Dali curl, it’s important to keep it neat and fresh with our simple styling techniques.
1) Run a little water through your hair to dampen it
2) Take a fine-toothed comb and brush the hairs in the direction you want them to sit
3) With some barber scissors, trim at the stray hairs on the outer edge and the bottom of your moustache. If your hairs are messy, use the comb to hold them in place. Remember with trimming, less is more so avoid going over the top with the snips.
4) Run clippers over the Mo to keep it level
5) Make sure to clean up the rest of your face with a neat shave and keep those edges clean
6) Rub a little beard oil through your hands and then gently work it into your face hedge. For a stylish do, use some beard wax and style to your liking.
Or if you feel like treating yourself, head down to Gentleman’s Tonic for a bespoke beard treatment or a wet shave once December 1st rolls around.
