On your bike, get set, go! Ding ding! That’s the sound of a bicycle (and the sound of a tram but i digress! If you’re looking for a route to do some roaming on in Hong Kong, here at BloomMe we have you covered. From beginners to advanced, we’ve compiled a groovy list of where you can take your wheeled friend this festive season. Don’t forget your helmet!
Beginners: Sha Tin – Tai Po
Length 1 1/2-2 hours (14km)
Let’s ease into this new hobby. One of the most popular routes in Hong Kong, this cruisey trail takes you along some of the best scenery in HK. Starting in Sha Tin, this mainly flat and steady bike route begins with a bikes-for-hire shop at the MTR (follow the blue signs) and finishes with another bike rental shop in Tai Po for you to return your bike (convenient). Bikes will cost around $60 for the whole day.
If you’ve finished the trail and still want more, continue another 8km from Tai Po to Tai Mei Tuk. You’ll take in the sights from Plover Cove reservoir as well as a super cute village named Pat Sin Leung. Don’t forget to stretch!
Easy- Medium: Cheung Chau Island
Length: 2 hours (with sightseeing)
A favourite of the BloomMe gang, Cheung Chau is home of great seafood and bicycles galore. As the whole island is paved for them, look forward to easy bike hire and smooth paths. The island itself is relatively small, so it will take around 2 hours to do a full circuit while enjoying the sights and sounds.
For bicycle hire, it is usually around 10-20$ an hour, but some places are negotiable. For those who can’t cycle on their own, you can hire your very own rickshaw and elect the strongest member of your group to take the pedals.

Medium: Lamma Island
Length: 2-3 hours
Home to hippies, food, and pets, Lamma island is not filled with llamas as some may be disappointed to find out, but it is home to perfect cycling trails with no stairs and plenty of paved roads. The family trail is a hot spot for cyclists during the week and hikers during the weekend, but be warned that there are a few hills that you will need to push through.
Finish off the day with a nice beer overlooking the pier, or head into the shops to see what knick knacks you can snag.
Medium: Tai Lam Reservoir Loop
Length: 3-4 hours
Tai Lam Country Park is a wash with different cycling options from flat roads to rollercoaster turns. A favourite for some mountain bikers, the flatter route option that circles around the reservoir is your go-to if you’re up for a medium challenge. If the adrenaline isn’t pumping like it should, try a bit of off-road cycling if your bike lets you, but always remember to put safety first and do not attempt any trail that is beyond your ability. Also avoid clogging up the trails, mountain bikers come around corners super fast and you don’t want any Michael Bay-like collisions!
Difficult: The Peak
Length: 1-2 hours
The hike to the peak is a great way to spend a weekend recovering from whatever naughtiness you got up to, but if you’re looking to push your fitness to the next level then grab your bike and start the ascent. Climbing via Magazine Gap Road, this trail is not for the weary and is best suited for those comfortable with road-cycling. As it can be dangerous heading up in heavy traffic, try to avoid peak hour and wear reflective clothing.
If you’re a superstar cyclist and found that route unfulfilling, you can continue over the peak into Big Wave Bay. With stunning views of the beaches and some gnarly twists and turns, you’ll be kissing the sand once you make it down this extra 3-4 hour route. Don’t forget a towel!
