The hardest thing about starting a new year is that we always have big plans to make changes in our lifestyle to become healthier and happier. However, the bigger these plans are, the more stress or work they seem to be and then we inevitably give up in a month. That’s why it’s important to create or pick up small habits that are easy to keep to, that way you’re more likely to keep up with them and they become a permanent habit in your life.

Change your water consumption habits

There are many things you can do to improve how you consume water. The easiest thing we’ve done the past few months is to keep a glass of water by your bed at night, and drink it first thing in the morning. This hydrates and washes out the toxins we’ve collected in our sleep, it wakes us up and helps, starts off our metabolism and gets us going for the day ahead.

During the day we like to keep a marked water bottle on our desk that tells us how much water we should have drunk before certain times. If you’re not a huge water drinker, try tea and herbal teas in particular! Chamomile or lavender tea are great before bed, or if you’re someone who depends on java to get through the day, green tea is a great natural energy booster and a great alternative to coffee!

Hungry Eyes

Portion control is our biggest faux par, especially when restaurants try to make a big deal out of making extra large plates. If you want to cut down on what you’re eating but don’t necessarily want to feel like you’re on a diet, use smaller plates to trick your body into thinking it’s eating more! If the idea of over eating at buffets, parties, or big family dinners- CNY I’m looking at you!- try eating a healthy snack before hand so when you get there you won’t over indulge!

We all know we shouldn’t go shopping on an empty stomach and yet its so tempting when there isn’t a lot of food in the house to stop us- but having a slice of toast before going shopping will stop you from making impulsive decisions and buying junk food! Juice your food on a Sunday and freeze it so you have a healthy juice to drink everyday without extra mess or cleaning!

Let’s get physical!

Have you ever tried wearing wrist weights whilst drying your hair? Well trust us, ladies, it’s worth it! Especially if you have thick or long hair, this simple trick can transform your tricep definition without changing your morning routine!

If you’re not exactly a gym goer or a fitness lover, try pay yourself every time you work out as a reward. Put $10 or $20 into a jar after every workout by the end of the week or month you can treat yo’ self to something at the end!

Looking at the clock as you work out? Make playlist that’s as long as your workout that way you can focus on the music (or audiobooks) and forget about how long you’ve been working out!

Well, well, wellness!

If you’re like us with a 24/7 on the go lifestyle, getting to sleep can be quite a task- no matter how much we crave it! Try adding a few drops of lavender essential oil to a tissue paper and putting it under your pillow to help ease your sleep.

Put your phone or computer background as a motivational quote or image, that way every time you look at it, you’ll feel more confident about the healthy habits you’re adopting!

Watch puppies and kittens on YouTube! Studies have found that watching videos of baby animals such as puppies and kittens increase happiness and decrease stress! If this isn’t the best news all day then you deserve a virtual hug!
