Red wine facials: the perfect way to mix two of our favourite past times together. Although alcohol doesn’t seem like the ideal component for a facial, it actually has a lot of benefits. Whiskey, vodka and other hard liquors won’t do you any favours but red wine is packed with anti-oxidants, and has similar effects to grape seed oil and dark chocolate due to all the resveratrol, which makes your skin elastic and protects it from harmful UV Rays. So WINE not give it a go, and make your one vino facial mask at home to have the perfect girl’s night in. Here are our top 3 to try at home:
Nice and easy to start with- this DIY mask is the easiest, most accessible and it’s effective! Simply mix together: 1 cup plain yogurt for moisturising, 1 tablespoon of honey to reduce redness and acne and 4-5 tablespoons of red wine. Since you don’t need a lot of wine, why not have a glass to enjoy whilst you wait for the mask to do its magic. Rinse off after 10 mins and you’ll have one more reason to love merlot.
If adding moisture to your skin isn’t what you’re worried about, swap out the greek yogurt for egg whites which tightens pores, controls oily skin as well as smooths out wrinkles. Simply add 1 egg white to a tablespoon of honey and 3 tablespoons of red wine and apply for 10 mins before rinsing off.
For those who are a bit of a pro at homemade face masks, this red wine clay exfoliating mask is perfect for you. The clay will draw out the impurities from your skin (and can be bought at most health food stores), the grapeseed oil is for moisture and the oat flour will gently exfoliate your skin as you apply the mask. For consistency you’ll probably need a bit more wine so use 1/2 cup of red wine with 1/2 cup of the kaolin clay and 2 tablespoons of both the grapeseed oil and oat flour.
Don’t feel like using your own precious wine for a DIY facial? Why not book with Caudalie, a pioneering French boutique spa on Gough Street that knows the importance of using grapes and grapevines for facials and skin care. Indulge in some vinotherapy without a hangover!
