Easy Peasy Detox Smoothies!
Remember those new year’s resolutions you made pre-NYE? Remember how insistent you were that you were going to follow through with every single one? Remember being excited to start eating healthy foods and giving detoxing a whirl?
Sorry. We do apologise for reminding you, and if you’re anything like the rest of us you are probably struggling to get going on that healthy food kick. That brand new blender is just sitting in your kitchen begging to be used, and every time you walk past kale you feel a pang of guilt for not figuring out how to make it actually taste good. Fear not, Bloom Me lover, for we have the answer for what smoothies you can make this year that actually taste nice and take little time to make.
When it comes to making detox smoothies, the best part about them is that you can add and subtract ingredients until the cows come home to get the smoothie to your liking. These detox smoothies are just a guide, so be sure to make your own recipe that makes your heart sing
Dust off the blender, swing past the market, and start making a dent in that new years resolution list (you can always learn a new language in February).
The Basic Detox Smoothie
Let’s begin with the essential ingredients needed for a classic detox smoothie. The ideal formula: high fibre fruits, citrus, and high fibre grains (don’t worry, we will tell you what ingredients you will need below). The fibre is the key ingredient in this recipe, as it helps food in your body to, ahem, move through in an orderly manner which is what you’re looking for during a cleanse. It is winter in Hong Kong at the moment, so we think it is okay to omit a few ice cubes in this smoothie, but come summer it can make for a refreshing detox punch.
What you will need:
1 cup coconut water
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 teaspoon fresh ginger
1 cup fresh pineapple
1 handful baby spinach or kale
Pinch cayenne pepper
The Lemon Lime Detox Smoothie
When life gives you lemons, something something detox smoothie!
Citrus fruits are great for detoxing. Being incredibly water-rich, these yummy fruits helps to flush toxins out of your body. And when it’s paired with our dear friend fibre, these useful fruits make for the ultimate cleanse.
The bonus ingredient in this smoothie is the dandelion greens as they’re said to be one of the most cleansing of the greens. But if you can’t find them anywhere in Hong Kong then swap in kale or baby spinach.
What you will need:
1/2 lemon, peeled and with the seeds removed
1/2 lime, peeled and with the seeds removed
2 medium bananas
Juice from 1 large orange
1-2 cups chopped dandelion greens, kale or spinach
Green Tea Cinnamon Honey Smoothie
If we told you there was a detoxifying, low-calorie, warm drink that can help wean you off coffee? You’d probably think we were crazy, until you reread the name of this smoothie and had second thoughts. The green tea in this beverage is bursting with energy, and when paired with the cinnamon and honey make for a metabolism-boosting trio that can help you overcome that afternoon slump.
You will need:
1/2 cup green tea, chilled
1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk or your choice of milk
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon honey
Remember, these smoothies are meal replacements and not snacks. If you find that you’re too full but still have more in the blender, put the remainder in an air-tight container and keep it chilled for the next day.
Ready to tick more off your list? Time to get into cycling, the easiest and best workout you can in Hong Kong (plus you can drag friends along for the ride!)
Or if you can’t ride a bicycle, time to do some walking outdoors.
