h3>Essential Hong Kong Apps for 2019! March 25, 2019

We all know the life of an HK Chica is anything but slow. We have workouts to plan, work deadlines to meet, and what is this “self-care” that so many love to preach? Fortunately, here is a little list of apps to make city life that much more manageable and your work commutes more productive. Instead of Instagramming on your phone, research the following:

Make last-minute dinner plans and avoid the hustle of LKF. Thanks to Eatigo, Southeast Asia’s food popular food reservation app, this handy tool comes with discounts and allows the user to find the perfect meal locale within minutes. Very user-friendly and offering a number of options, one can choose to eat based on district, cuisine, time, and more, all while giving a discount code to use upon reserving. New users can also get a $25 discount (on top of the reservation!) with the code BLOOMME.

You know this scenario: you’re on your way to the Airport Express and you don’t want to pay the ridiculously expensive fare to get yourself to the airport. Thank goodness for Klook! This travel discount app allows you to book tickets to many attractions, including that attractive Airport Express, at a discount and from the convenience of your smartphone. This is available in many countries and also suggests activities and trendy hotspots. Writing reviews is encouraged by giving you Klook credits which can be used for even more discounts.

You didn’t think we’d make this list and not toot our own horn, did you? Schedule pampering for the moment you step out of the office. Using Hong Kong’s premiere beauty scheduling app, BloomMe, you have 12 categories of self-care from which to choose and from a variety of 1700 spas here in Hong Kong. Get the most out of this free service by enabling notifications on your phone to be informed of the best deals-particularly on weekends! Services offered are always at a discount, and you can make the most of your beauty budget with credits from each booking and bonuses for referring friends.

We all need a little luxury to congratulate ourselves for our hard Hong Kong work. OntheList is a fantastic way to get that luxury without the buyer’s remorse of the high price. Offering over 100 brands, you can sign up to receive notifications (at least weekly) of sales on luxury items, from handbags to sunglasses to essential oils. With notifications, OnTheList will also tell you when a coveted item has been replenished or newly marked down. While the service is free, you must register to attend the sale event, which is usually held in Central.

Afraid to commit to a specific workout or gym? Download and register for ClassPass, the worldwide exercise scheduling app that allows the user to select the specific regimen at a specific time and a specific centre. This subscription plan also has an option for ClassPass Live, which connects you to live, interactive workouts for home if your busy city life doesn’t allow you to sign up for the class you desperately wanted. And after working out, connect to HealthKit to find out how many calories you burned and your average heart rate.

The dread of many a city-dweller: low battery power with no charging bank in sight. Fortunately, MobiJuce comes to the rescue with its low-priced services and “JucePacs” (aka power banks) available to rent. For the low price of $2 per half hour, use the app on your phone to find a “JuceBox” where you can pick up a rental power bank to be used and dropped off at another location, if necessary. And with the code: BM2019 new users can get 5 days of free charging($100 value).

Pacific Coffee

Another tragic scenario is the dreaded Missing of the Morning Alarm. While this may be a jarring start to your day, the direction can swiftly be changed with the blessed Pacific Coffee. Using your registered and loaded Perfect Cup Card, you can conveniently order coffee from your phone and have it waiting for you at the nearest shop before rushing off to work. With that registered card, you will also be the first to know about new seasonal specialities and promotions. Forgot about a birthday gift for your work spouse? Send them a Pacific Coffee gift card via the app, as well.

HK Movie

So many films, so little time to decide which selection is best. The HK Movie app makes these decisions significantly easier. By filtering your selection of film, time, location, language, and even 2D vs. 3D, one can instantly see what showings are available and how close they are to being sold out. After making your entertainment selection, pick your seat and order tickets right from the app, too.

Hong Kong is a busy but lively place to be. With the help of these 8 apps, life just became a bit more manageable with a few simple smartphone clicks.

h3>A Culinary Bang for your Buck(et) List March 13, 2019

Mmmm…March in Hong Kong. Can you feel the excitement building? Spring is returning to the city,  and we are busy preparing our costumes for the Hong Kong Sevens while also trying to figure out how we will undo the rugby weekend calories in time for junk season. But a better way to treat your body and your wallet arrives in town a few weeks before the foreign athletes do. I am speaking about the fourth annual Taste of Hong Kong which takes over the Central Harbourfront 21-24 March. For a list of the most satisfying selections from the savoury to the sweet of this year’s line-up, continue to scroll below!

Start with what you know and love! Warm the taste buds up with local favourite Little Bao and its selection of popular burger baos and side dishes. Do not forget that while you may often frequent the Soho restaurant, Little Bao’s chefs, as well as those from other local favourites Haku, Pici, and Zuma will be serving up exclusives for the Taste Festival.

After teasing the taste buds with familiar favourites, move in the direction of Le Comptoir Group’s collaborative effort from the chefs of  Bibo, Silencio, and The Ocean.  Entitled the “Six Hand Collaboration Dish,” this creation is sure to tempt and satisfy any palate with its use of pigeon, pork, and even an oyster cream containing whole oysters and squid ink nori chip.

Six Hand Collaboration Dish

Now are you ready to try something entirely new? Well, relatively speaking? Then look no further than to newcomer Old Bailey. Stepping outside of its Tai Kwun home for the weekend, this restaurant debuts its “Buddha Jumps Over the Wall” xiao long bao. Who doesn’t love a fresh take on an old standby? These new Buddha baos that originated in the Jiangnan region feature Iberico pork while being spiced up with Sichuan peppercorns.

Buddha Jumps Over the Wall

After all this savour it is time for some dessert. While Italians may have invented gelato, the Australians have spent a considerable amount of time perfecting it, and thus are sending Hong Kong their most beloved of gelaterias, Gelato Messina. Handmade chocolate and high quality jersey milk will be found in Gelato Messina’s concoctions, whose names are as catchy as their premium ingredients. Sample “Dr. Evil’s Mini Magic Mushroom” cake or the “PayLOVA Sundae” in additional to more traditional desserts, such as a Dulce de Leche.

Dr. Evil’s Mini Mushroom Cake

No mouth-watering feast is complete without some substance to actually water the mouth. A selection of beverages both alcoholic and non is always available, but for those looking for something as unique as the food being purchased, be sure to check out the Stella Artois World Draught Master Competition, being sponsored by Taste’s 2019 major beer partner, Stella Artois. Hometown Glory actress Kelly Cheung will make a special guest appearance at the competition, which is being held exclusively on Friday evening, 22 March.

Give your tummy and taste buds a rest at Central Harbourfront by taking in all the other attractions that come with your general entry ticket purchase. Chefs will be doing on-stage demonstrations at The Wolf Theatre, Gourmet Market will be sampling different artisan producers of food and drink, and live bands and DJs will be occupying The Sound Stage. Do not forget that parents can bring their children aged 12 and under for free, and there will be a Kids Zone to encourage the next generation of chefs with culinary activities (as well as other non-food-related crafts).

Finally, while Taste of Hong Kong celebrates all that is food, do not forget to stop by the BloomMe booth to celebrate all that is skin pampering. Skin Laundry has partnered with the popular Hong Kong app to give away FREE facials at the Hydration Station (to help the skin after all that Stella Artois), sample skin care products, and spa cash. Also, BloomMe is offering an exclusive discount code for tickets to Taste! Use code “BLOOMMETASTE” at checkout to claim!

So there you have it: new food, familiar food, beer, bands, and some beauty.  It is the Bang for your Bucket List for this year’s Taste of Hong Kong presented by HSBC. Find it all at the Central Harbourfront this 21-24 March!

h3>Fun Ways To Celebrate International Women’s Day! March 8, 2019

International Women’s Day 2019 is all about one thing: #BalanceForBetter. On March 8th, Hong Kong and the world are celebrating the achievements and the inspiring journeys of our women and promoting the need for a gender-balanced society.

This year, we say the best way to promote balance and raise awareness for charities and causes across the city is to do something fun and empowering. From fund-raising cocktails to a culinary class, from celebrating the achievements of women of the world to celebrating the love of women close to us, International Women’s Day is the perfect excuse to bring #balanceforbetter into our everyday lives.

Girl Power!

Selfies For A Good Cause

International Women’s Day doesn’t just last for one day, it runs every day all year round.

This year use your social media for a better cause, and instead of posting a photo your avocado toast or your new sneakers post a photo promoting International Women’s Day and #BalanceForBetter.

Post a photo with the iconic balance pose and the hashtags #IWD2019 and #BalanceforBetter and join the global movement dedicated to change and awareness. Check out our favourite Instagram Hotspots around the city and snap your #balance photo in style.

An All-Out Girls Night

How often do we grab our best gal pals and take them out to celebrate sisterhood? Not often enough, that’s what we say. International Women’s Day this year is all about balance, and with our full schedules and hectic lives, we often neglect to spend time celebrating the most important women of all: our family and friends.

This International Women’s Day, we say the best way to celebrate is to treat the women in your life by taking them out for a celebratory meal. Ramen in Soho, Italian in Causeway Bay, even just a small sandwich in Tin Hau can mean to world to someone special to you. Book in with Eatigo to snag a stunning deal on reservations and cuisine, and use this year’s International Women’s Day to celebrate the women who influence and inspire you.

Private Cooking Class with Chef Vicky Lau

International Women’s Day is all about celebrating women and their accomplishments, and we are over the moon to be celebrating the success and accomplishments of Hong Kong’s very own Vicky Lau. Known amongst culinary circles as the French Chinese fine dining queen (yass queen!) Vicky is using her culinary skills to help raise money to empower women through The Women’s Foundation. The Women’s Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to improving the impactful community programs, and by promoting education and the empowerment of the female voice.

From 11 am to 2 pm at  V-ZUG in Causeway Bay, Vicky will be hosting a private cooking lesson for a class of 10 students. A hands-on, completely immersive, entirely divine class includes a three-dish lesson and a glass of Ruinart Blanc de Blancs champagne. Can’t cook without a glass of something, right?

Grab your girlfriends, put on your dancing shoes, and start off the night right with a healthy balance of cocktails and charity. As an added bonus, the night will also be used to showcase Old Bailey’s upcoming Friday night Happy Hour: Book Club. What’s not to love?

h3>The Wedding Makeup Trends We Love In 2018! May 15, 2018

That was to the tune of wedding bells, and if you’re an upcoming blushing bride (or just a romantic-at-heart who is day dreaming about future weddings) then it is time to sink your teeth in to some 2018 wedding trends we are seriously digging. This year, it’s all about effortless beauty combined with subtly chic. Gone are the days of heavily contoured cheekbones and smokey eyes, it’s time to keep it nice and simple and let your natural beauty shine through on your day of days.

Metallic Liner

Brighten your eyes and nail that angelic look with a small line of metallic eyeliner underneath. For this look, you should aim for a soft metallic rather than something too bold. Gold, silver, even a soft pastel can give you that extra oomph without taking away from your natural beauty.

Dewy and Fresh

Although this trend has been going for a while, having a dewy and fresh makeup look paired with 2018 effortless-angelic hair is suddenly taking centre stage. For this look, you’ll have soft highlights on your cheekbones, cupids bow, and eyes, which is then paired with a barely there glossy lip (preferably in nude). Keep this look simple and effortless, some small earrings work best.

No lashes lahes

Gone are the days of huge bar lashes, and now is the time for au naturale lashes, baby! For this trend, brides are ditching the heavy glue and going for soft, and very natural looking lashes with maybe just a suggestion of mascara.

Be sure to try out some of Hong Kong’s best lash extension parlours for lashes that turn heads as people wonder if you’ve always had Bambi eyes.
