The Internet has been exploding with DIY cosmetic tutorials lately, but for some reason there seems to be a lot of negative feedback from people, complaining that its cheaper to buy the products rather than make them.
We’re not a fan of negative vibes and want to convert the haters into Dedicated DIY Divas! Here are 7 reasons why making your own beauty products is better than buying them.
1) You’ll save SO MUCH MONEY!
Initially it seems like you’re spending way more than you usually would, because you’re buying the individual ingredients- usually in one go if you’re just starting out- but this bulk buying pays off in the long run. It’s also worth reminding yourself that your current beauty cabinet wasn’t bought in one go, and has been gradually growing for years so it’s worth noting that this is a one off bulk purchase for when you get started and after that you’ll rarely have to top up on ingredients so you save the $$$ for something else. Trip to Bali anyone?
You’ll also notice that you’re saving money on ingredients since a lot of homemade cosmetics are made from things you’ll already have lying around the house such as coconut oil, coffee grounds and honey. Yum!
To help put in perspective how much you currently spend on cosmetics: jot down how many beauty products you use per month, and how much they cost.
2) They last longer
Because you’re not likely to make huge batches of the products you make, you’ll find that the ingredients will last around 6 times longer than the ones that you buy!
Just be careful when making hand creams/ cream based products- they don’t have a particularly long shelf life. Our advice is to only make these products in small doses and to keep them refrigerator.
3) You know EXACTLY what you’re putting into your body
Your skin absorbs EVERYTHING, into your body. Can you be 100% certain that the products you’re buying are safe for your skin and body? Many products state that they’re “all natural” but that doesn’t always mean it is. BloomMe isn’t on the anti-chemical brigade, because we know that everything in the world is chemicals; but if you take the time to read the back of your shampoo, deodorant or any one of your products, you are bound to find something that you don’t understand.
A lot of mass-produced beauty products such as nail polish, perfumes and deodorants contain phthalates (often shortened to DEP or DBP), which are bad for your liver and stomach. You may also be familiar with propylene glycol (often shortened to PEG or PPG), which can cause eye irritation.
When you make your own, you are 100% certain of the contents.
4) Better for the planet
When you’re constantly buy new beauty products, you are continually buying more packaging of plastic, paper, glass and other materials, which might not be recyclable, and hurting our Mother Earth. Make your own products and you’ll be able to reuse and recycle the containers! Yay!
In addition to mother earth, you’ll also be able to make sure that your beauty products aren’t tested on animals. <3
5) It’s educational
The BloomMe Girls thought we were pretty well informed on beauty, beauty products and skin knowledge, but even we were surprised with how much we’ve learnt over the past few months by making beauty products ourselves.
Learning about what your skin and body wants and need is a very empowering feeling, and one you get the hang of it, and can transfer the knowledge to make things without the aid of a tutorial is really, very exciting.
6) Great as gifts!
Can’t afford to fork out for a birthday present? Can’t think what brands your mother-in- law likes? Use your knowledge of beauty DIY know-how to surprise your loved ones with lovely homemade products. A personal touch goes a long way and people really appreciate the effort! Nothing says love like “I made too much so here is the extra!” 😉
