So you say you want flawless skin? Aside from booking a hydrating facial on BloomMe, there are a myriad of endless steps to achieving bright, dewy skin – here, I’ve rounded up the top 5 simple rules of what you need to give up for better skin. Whether you’re looking to clear up acne or just want to keep your skin looking healthier for longer, these are all easy, surefire ways to make sure your skin looks it’s best. No matter your skin type, you’re sure to benefit from these guidelines.

☕ Ditch soda and coffee for more water 💦

Staying hydrated is key to healthy, clear skin that glows. Skin cells contain mostly water. So if you’re dehydrated, then your skin will look dry as well.

The sugar (see #4) and caffeine in soda actually causes dehydration. So, while you may want to grab a soda after a workout or when you’re thirsty, it’ll actually make you more thirsty and you’ll want to drink even more as a result. Similarly, the caffeine in coffee does the same thing.

Try to drink more water, coconut water, or green and herbal tea. These are all great sources of H2O, you can even try soda water if you like the fizz. You should be drinking around 8 cups of water a day. Or you can increase your water intake by eating more water-filled fruits and veggies, like watermelon, strawberries, cucumber, lettuce, and tomatoes.

😴 Don’t always use the same pillowcase 🛏

Your pillowcase can absorb the dirt and sweat from your hair, hands, and residue of the nighttime products you use on your face. So while it may look clean to the naked eye, especially with a dark colored sheet set, your pillowcase can lead to the growth of bacteria and acne. Even if you wash your face, it’s a good idea to wash your pillowcase every few days.

🚿 Never forget to wash your face 👩🏼‍🦰

During the day, dirt, sweat, pollutants from the air, oil, and tiny particles from your makeup build up on your face. No matter how tired you are, it’s crucial to wash your face before bed. If not, you’re just asking for it. No more rolling into bed with the excuse “I’ll just wash it in the morning”.

Also, don’t skip washing your face in the morning. As mentioned before, bacteria from your pillowcase can transfer to your skin. It’s crucial to use face wash again in the morning to clear away any remaining residue. If not, it could clog your pores all day.

I’d recommend a cooling face wash in the morning. It can wake up your skin and help you really look alive. Plus, to be extra proactive, also wash your face after you workout. If I get up early to go running before work, I always make sure to wash my face both right when I wake up and after showering post-workout.

🧁🍭 Don’t eat too much sugar 🍬🍩

Overindulging on sugary snacks and sweets can lead to more wrinkles down the road. The increased glucose from sugar into your bloodstream creates advanced glycation end products (AGEs). AGEs can damage both collagen and elastin. The end result is your normal tissues become weak or inflexible. AKA your skin doesn’t bounce back as easily.

So basically, the more sugar your eat, the more AGEs you have. Which means the potential for premature signs of ageing early on, deeper wrinkles, and more fine lines. It can also lead to increased inflammation.

A solution? If you’re having sugar cravings, opt for low-glycemic foods that won’t spike your blood sugar or insulin levels. Refined sugars are hiding in almost all processed snacks. So it’s best to stick to fresh fruit or low-glycemic sweeteners like maple syrup, coconut sugar, or stevia. Be sure to check out this list of essential good-skin foods you need in your diet.

🤜🏻 Try not to stress too much 🤛🏻

Stress hormones leads your skin to produce more oil. This, in turn, can cause clogged pores and blackheads. I know it’s not easy, but try to incorporate more stress-relieving activities into your weekly routine. Replenish your skin with a soothing organic facial, relieve tension with acupressure, or pamper yourself with a full body massage.

Take some time out of your day to do anything that relaxes you- yoga, an afternoon walk, a warm bath, or meditation. Whatever it is, try to set aside time once a day to chill out.

I’m blessed to have really clear skin, thanks partially to my genetics and partially to my mom always teaching me how to care for my skin. It’s never too early or too late to adopt these 5 practices for achieving the ultimate healthy, glowing skin.
