Humidity, air-conditioning, sun, pollution- it’s not easy trying to keep your makeup on and in place in Hong Kong. Seeing as the “just got out of the shower after a big night in Lan Kwai and I forgot to take my makeup off” look isn’t the “it” style , it’s time to learn how to keep that fresh look going all day long.

As the mercury rises outside and the air-con temperatures plummet inside, your best defence against summer starts with your beauty routine.

All about that base

The best way to keep your makeup strong is to start with a good base layer. Using an oil-free moisturizer in the morning will keep your skin fresh and stops your complexion reflecting light. If your complexion is having a little freak out with the weather, check out our suggestions on giving your skin a little life here.

Optimus Primer

Think of your primer as the leader of the Transformers Optimus Prime; all the other Transformers can do their best to fight the Decepticons but at the end of the day they need their leader to succeed and stay together. All your skincare and makeup plans can be pristine and full proof but without their leader, they will fail.

Putting on primer after your moisturizer only takes a few seconds but can make all the difference. It helps to hold your foundation on longer and leave you feeling refreshed.

Invest in a good primer and make sure that it works with your skin type.

Fake it, don’t cake it, til you make it,

Bronzer is a great way to look sun-kissed without encountering those merciless UV rays. Although cake-face was a trendy look during the height of the Paris Hilton fad, it’s important to remember that bronzer is supposed to compliment your complexion not change it. No one is convinced that you magically adopted a magical tan that glitters slightly and seems to have rubbed off onto your collar, instead they should admire your contouring highlights.

Apply bronzer to the points of your face that normally hit the sun: forehead, cheekbones, nose, and chin. You can also sweep some over your neck and earlobes if you are planning on wearing your hair up. Opt for a matte bronzer to help fight any oil buildup during the day.

Don’t give them the “ole razzle dazzle”

Heavy shimmer, sparkles, glitter, and even dewey makeup is great in winter when everything is a little dull. During the day in summer, it can make you look sweaty and shiny. Try to avoid chasing that “dewey” look, try and stick to matte colours on your eyelids.

Waterproof mascara is not only for bad breakups and junk trips

Smokey eye makeup is a trendy night-time look, and definitely not trendy when it’s during the day and the black smudge is below your eye and halfway down your cheek. Although it can be a little tricky to remove at night (invest in a good oil-based product for that), using correct mascara can be the difference between butterfly lashes and having panda eyes.

If you’d prefer to avoid waterproof mascara, a fantastic alternative is a Diva Lashes Keratin Lift from Sense of Touch. There are no lash extensions, just your beautiful lashes being curled and tinted which lasts up to 12 weeks. Bambi lashes, here you come!

Blot, blot, blot

You know what’s cute? Small fluffy kittens in mugs, and effortless makeup. You know what’s not? Oily T-zones.

Carrying a small packet of blotting paper in your bag will become your life saver in Hong Kong. Gently dab away oil buildup during the day to ensure that you never look sweaty.

Found yourself on a date without your blot? Head to the bathrooms and see if they have those disposable toilet seat covers in the cubicle. They are made of blotting paper, and tearing a small segment off a fresh cover can be used as an emergency blotting sheet. Life hack sorted!

Become a fan of the fan

Motorized or not, fans are a great way of keeping cool in the heat. If you’re feeling dramatic, get a large decorative fan to keep in your bag for emergency situations such as a long taxi queue or awkward situations (they’re great to hide behind!)

Above all this summer in HK, make sure to stay hydrated in the heat and stay in air conditioning whenever possible. If you can’t find a reason to loiter in an air conditioned shop and protect your makeup, book and express mani with BloomMe and prepare to cool down while being pampered.
