Whether you’re a BloomMe veteran or a newbie to our fabulous app, you’ve probably noticed a plethora of amazing medi spas available which you can easily book through our medical or clinics categories. But what exactly is a medi-spa and what type of treatments do they do? Take a look below as we give you the beginners guide to medi-spas in Hong Kong!

What is a Medical Spa?

A medical spa, or a medi spa, is a fusion of a regular day spa and a medical clinic that offers you the beauty treatments and luxurious pampering of your favourite salon. With dozens across Hong Kong, Kowloon, and the New Territories, it’s not difficult to see why medi spa treatments have become the latest craze.

But what exactly are the treatments on offer? Here at Bloom Me, we are all about convenience so we have broken down the top 3 treatments for you to try this summer:

Botox

Made famous by Nicole Kidman and her mysteriously unmoving face, botox has become one of the most popular cosmetic procedures in the world. A neurotoxin derived from Clostridium botulinum, botox is used to reduce fine lines and wrinkles by paralysing the underlying muscles.Aside from reducing wrinkles, botox can also be used to treat migraines, excessive sweating, muscles spasms, and even eye twitches.

Before your first appointment, make sure to discuss your medical history with your doctor to make sure you are a suitable candidate for botox. Although it is a very common treatment, malpractice or unlicensed therapists can result in serious consequences.

Botox is administered by needle directly into the muscle. Depending on the area being treated, you may need to wait 3-4 months in between sessions. The effects are temporary and without continuous treatment your muscles will slowly regain the ability to move. Make sure you don’t go overboard with treatments, mannequins or having a ‘frozen expression’ are never fun at parties.

Hair Removal Treatments

Ever fantasised about never shaving, waxing, and/or plucking again? Now, thanks to technology and medi spas, this fantasy can become a reality. IPL and Laser Hair removal involve highly concentrated light beams being zapped into your skin which discourages hair growth. By introducing light to the hair follicle, IPL and laser aim to destroy the hair at it’s root and discourage your body from reforming more hairs.

In order to prepare for a treatment, the rule of thumb is no plucking or waxing, and that you should arrive at the salon with your hair already shaved. Make sure you are not sunburnt, not wearing any creams or deodorant, and that you arrive early to your appointment to allow time for paperwork and enjoying the air-conditioning.

Your wonderful technician will perform a patch test and assess your skin and hair’s suitability for the treatment. After slathering the area in cooling gel, the technician will use the machine to zap the area being treated. It’s a relatively painless treatment, although you may find that the skin is a little warm and irritated afterwards. Depending on your skin tone and hair colour, you will need to book between 6-8 sessions, as the treatment works in cycles. Hairless summer you say? Come at me short shorts!

HIFU

Although it sounds similar to a karate move, HIFU actually stands for ‘high intensity focused ultrasound’. Medically, HIFU is used to treat certain forms of cancer and other ailments using an acoustic lens to concentrate intersecting beams resulting in thermal agitation. In cosmetic use, it can be used to clear and treat fat from the body and improve your skin.

A relatively newer treatment on the market and often described as a ‘non surgical facelift’, HIFU can treat all sorts of areas, from your jowls to your eyes to your neck. Your technician will apply gel over the area being treated and then gently use the ultrasound machine to focus energy and stimulate the skin. The procedure is painless and takes around 60-90 minutes for the face and neck.

In this treatment, the energy is used to stimulate and rejuvenate the deepest layers of your skin leaving your skin looking younger and more lifted. By stimulating the skin, your body will begin to produce more collagen and enhance tautness across the skin. HIFU is perfect for those over 30 years who have noticed their skin losing it’s elasticity and firmness.

You may notice some results straight away, however the real magic of HIFU comes through over a period of a few months with collagen in the skin becoming renewed and replaced. Can you say hello new face?
