Looking for an easy way to get that summer glow without the tedious hours of lying in the sun? Spray tanning is your new friend.

Spray tanning is a way of tanning using a fine mist sprayed onto your skin by a machine or technician. The spray contains an ingredient known as Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) which colours your skin brown through chemical reactions and a little bit of pixie dust.

Perfect for any upcoming events where you want to look a little bit sun kissed, or simply as a way to make you feel like you’ve just come back from holiday, spray tans are becoming more popular around Hong Kong salons. They are more convenient and more precise than at-home tanning kits as your spectacular technician knows just how to spray you (some will even spray on abs and contouring, finally you can throw away your gym pass!)

In order to maximise your glow and avoid looking streaky orange follow these simple do’s and don’ts:

DO: ask your therapist questions about the procedure. It won’t make you look dumb and you can learn a lot from them. Ask them about what products are being used, allergies, and whether you want your face sprayed too.

DON’T: assume the colour you need. Just because you want to be a dark chocolate colour doesn’t mean you can go that dark. Consult first.

DO: exfoliate as much as possible the day before your appointment. Pay particular attention to your elbows, knees, and heels as these areas tend to be a little dryer than others. By exfoliating the skin, you will avoid ending up with a streaky tan or a tan than rubs off too soon.

DON’T:  apply moisturisers, deodorants, cologne, body oils, or makeup before getting your tan. It stops the absorption of the bronzing agents.

DO: shave the night before. The hair won’t grow back quickly enough to disrupt your tan but shaving will ruin the spread.

DON’T: wear nice underwear or your fancy bathers when tanning. Wear a dark coloured thong or use the disposable underwear on offer at the salon. If you’re worried about your undergarments getting tanned, just go nakey. The therapist has seen it all before anyway.

DO: make sure to cover your hair with the shower-cap provided. Tie it in a high bun for best results and try to tuck all those stray hairs into the cap.

DON’T: wear jewellery. Nothing. Not even earrings. It will ruin the jewellery and will make the tan uneven.

DO: wear loose clothing as a fresh tan will rub off onto your clothes and can be super tricky to get out.Make sure you don’t wear a bra for 4 hours after as well to avoid rubbing. If you choose to go braless, wear loose clothing so you don’t look like a hippie at Woodstock.

DON’T: come into contact with any water after getting the tan. No swimming, no exercise, and no rain dancing for at least 8 hours.

DO: Try to sleep in your tan so that the chemicals can be completely absorbed in overnight. It is better to get your spray tan in the evening rather than the morning so that you can climb into bed sooner and wake up browner.

DON’T: Sleep on your fancy sheets the night after a tan. Fresh out of the salon tan will transfer to your sheets and some awkward questions may come your way. Aim to sleep in older sheets or plan for laundry day.

DO: Shower after 8 hours of tanning. Make sure to avoid using any exfoliants or harsh shower cleansers. Wash yourself gently using a circular motion and pat dry rather than rub.

DON’T: freak out at the amount of tan coming off in the shower. It is the bronzer in the tan, not the actual tan itself coming off.

DO: moisturise, moisturise, and moisturise some more. Stay as hydrated as possible. Your tan will last eons longer.

DON’T: avoid moisturiser. Seriously, make sure you do this as much as possible. Do it.
